Story of the Kokeshi Ningyo (Wooden Dolls)

Kokeshi dolls were said to have originated in northern Japan in the 1600's and are recognized as one of the traditional folk arts of Japan. The stylized, handmade wooden dolls have become a favorite collectible with many people around the world and they share a common philosophy in the pursuit of beauty and artistry through simplicity. It is believed by some, that the earliest dolls were made by artisans to represent the lost daughters of a family. During time of drought and famine, daughters were sometimes forced to become indentured servants for wealthier families and so a Kokeshi doll was placed in the home to symbolize the spirit of the lost duaghter. Come and see our ever changing display of Kokeshi ningyo.
