Omatsuri is the Japanese word for festival or holiday and these events occur throughout the year in Japan. There is a common saying that no matter when, one can always find an Omatsuri somewhere in Japan. They can be secular or have religious meaning and usually celbrate a particular event or have a special theme. There are snow festivals in the winter, cherry blossom festivals in the spring and harvest festivals in the all. A very imporant one initiated in Buddhist theology and one that has been celebrated for over 500 years, is Obon. It is a celebration to remember and give thanks to our ancestors. Bon Odori (dance) is one of the highlights wherever the Obon festival is being held and is a dance of joy giving thanks to our ancestors and the many sacrifices they have made for us.

The local Bon Odori is being held in Galt Gardens at 6pm Saturday, July 20th, 2013 and all are welcome to attend.
